New Australia, anyone?

This is great, does anyone know anything else about this? Why Paraguay?

"New Australia was a utopian socialist settlement in Paraguay founded by the Australian New Australian Movement. The colony was officially founded on 28 September 1893 as Colonia Nueva Australia and comprised 238 adults and children".

I've heard about this before, basically because we have a book in the library I work in about one of the australian women who was involved with the settlement - part feminist, post-colonial, and social/political utopian biography, I think. I'll have to hunt it down and let you know which woman and if it is any good. I remember when I saw the book, I had the same reaction as you - whaaaa? why paraguay?

There's a book on this very topic by Michael Wilding, formerly of these hallowed halls, called The Paraguayan Experiment. I read it 25 years ago, so can't even remember whether it was fiction or non fiction. But it was interesting. Add it to the 1001 books in Fisher you must read before you die.
